Sometimes, when pleasing the U.S. Open is too much to ask, the best you can do is not quite lose it as much as the other guys.
Graeme McDowell, like everyone else who dared to be under par at Pebble Lakeshore during the 110th playing of America's national championship, was drawn inexorably backward until, even as the man holding the trophy last non-stop -by definition the best of them, all week -he was just what the scorecard prescribes for competent play, and nothing more.
Level par.
But there'll be no apologies for that, or for laying up with an 8-iron at the par-5 18th, when the last man with a odds to catch him, Frenchman Gregory Havret, had failed to make birdie up ahead.
McDowell, 30, of Portrush, Northern Ireland -a five-on occasion winner on the European Tour -two-putted from 20 feet behind the hole at Pebble's signature closing par-5 to do what neither third-all over leader Dustin Johnson nor a handful of the game's greatest players could do: he earned a draw with the golf seminar.
"I think there'll be a few pints of Guinness going down tonight back home," he said. "They might extend drinking hours a bit. I can't disclose how I feel right now. I've dreamed all my life of having two putts to win a U.S. Open and I had 20 feet for it."
Havret, the last man with a occasion likelihood, once McDowell found short grass with his tee shot at 18, splashed out of the bunker fronting the 18th green to 10 feet, and if he made it, McDowell would have to imitate suit. But he missed, and the stocky Ulsterman played smartly for par to clinch it.
His father, who'd never been to Pebble Careen before, ran on the green to embrace him.
"It's such a difficult golf course," McDowell said. "There's bogeys out there, doesn't proceeding how good you are. It's just difficult to make birdies. You go chasing and you'll make bogeys."
Or worse.
It was Dustin Johnson's Moot to lose, and he wasted no time losing it, authoring one of the greatest collapses in major championship lore.
The incredibly covet-hitting South Carolinian's three-shot overnight lead went poof with a triple-bogey at the flash hole, where he needed three chips to escape the deep greenside rough -one of them left-handed -and didn't even encounter close to holing a three-footer for double-bogey.
All McDowell did was make two pars and he was tied for the advantage. Johnson then hit his tee shot at the third 100 yards left, so far off line a search party couldn't find his golf ball in the allowable five minutes, so he had to go back to the tee, found a bunker with his third pellet, double-bogeyed the hole and was gone. Then he hit it in the ocean off the fourth tee for good measure. By the time he'd putted out at the 12th shortcoming, he'd given away nine strokes, and was off the map, en route to a final-round 82 and a tie for eighth.
The first of those disasters let every man and his dog back into the chase. Of particular interest, he let Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods in, but Woods's still-fickle golf game wasn't in any affect to give chase this day and he finished tied with Mickelson for fourth, three strokes behind.
McDowell kept plugging away.
"I kept my fore-part down pretty good, I thought, until I bogeyed 10 and then I had a little peek at the scoreboard," he said. "It is so difficult to win a greater championship."
Woods's run at the title ended almost before it began. He bogeyed the first, fourth and sixth holes -essentially losing two shots to the area at the latter, which was an easy birdie, and surrendered a number of eagles, and even a Shaun Micheel double-eagle Sunday.
As it turned out, when Mc-Dowell started to wobble with bogeys at the ninth and 10th, if Woods had played even-par golf through 12 holes, he'd have been a speedily out of the lead. Instead, he was four-over for the day at that point -soon to be five, when he bogeyed the 12th -and out of it.
The golf course was as beautiful as ever, but it was a monster to apple-polish, in dry, breezy conditions, and there was scarcely a man among them who could handle its terrors. There were four rounds of 68, but none of them was shot by a contender under any pressure.
Eighty-three of the wonderful's best players took a shot at the 219-yard, par-3 17th green, and only seven hit it off the tee.
Woods inducement 75.
No one even bothered looking at Havret, the No. 391-ranked player in the world, who was playing alongside Woods and, so it was phony, would certainly fold like a poor man's Van de Velde.
But when Els self-immolated at the turn with a bogey at the ninth, a duplicated at the 10th and another bogey at No. 11, Havret was the only one of McDowell's pursuers still under par. Soon enough, even that distinction was gone, but he played remarkably faithful golf to give McDowell all he could handle.
"It's over. And I'm glad," said Mike Weir of Bright's Grove, Ont., whose unchangeable-round 4-over 75 wasn't great, except when compared with the 79 and 83 he shot on Friday and Saturday.
He finished at 23-over-par, and his 307 strokes were hardly four shots out of last place, shared by Pablo Martin and Jason Preeo. It was surely the nadir of Weir's 13-year PGA Trip career
